Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.12-15 Part 10 (Dark Yugi&Yugi VS Pegasus)

This summary will be long...I'll try to make it short as possible...
(but the thoughts, observations and opinions makes it a long post with more pictures, let's say this duel is so important, there is a lot of details to take in)

Update (24/09/2018): I remember when I did write this analysis, it took me 3 days, making the panels ensembles were a pain too, since then I decided big duels like these should be divided in two parts, which is why the last duels of Battle City are divided in two, but the panels ensembles I had to re-do them because I lost most of them and re-upload them, it was tough, I redid 75 panels ensembles for this update, now is only missing the epilogue to finish off updating this Arc.

Plot Summary:

The previous post left off Jounouchi victory against Bandit Keith, Jounouchi confesses to Dark Yugi and Anzu, the duel felt to be his last and is aware he has no chance in beating Pegasus, so he asks if he can leave this kind of weight to Yugi, Dark Yugi immediately accepts it, now Dark Yugi has both honor cards to save his grampa, Kaiba brothers and Jounouchi's sister (that's a lot of weight), they don't feel the need to duel each other, Pegasus accepts to go to the final duel of Duelist Kingdom.
While Dark Yugi gets ready, Pegasus get out of his seat and go to the duel arena, on the way there, he meets Bandit Keith with knife threatening to give him the prize, Pegasus tells him he was aware of Bandit Keith cheating and will receive a penalty game, leaving Keith unconscious or likely dead.
Dark Yugi and Pegasus before sitting the table, their fighting spirits clashing seems noticeable to the viewers (Jounouchi and Anzu), they discuss the deal a little then they sit, shuffle each others decks and the duel starts...
Pegasus starts dominating the duel from the beginning, when Dark Yugi is at his lowest point mentally, he hears Yugi's voice, Yugi speaks up some revelations, even for Dark Yugi and us readers (I'll approach in detail), Yugi comes up with an idea to beat Pegasus, because he have been noticing Pegasus maybe can only read one mind at a time (it's quite true, when he was reading Keith and Jounouchi, if you look at the panel with the balloons saying "One of them"Keith and "The other one" Jounouchi), so he asks Dark Yugi to fight as well, Dark Yugi accepts it, Yugi makes the moves and Dark Yugi not knowing the cards Yugi put facedown, in other words, Yugi is the sword and Dark Yugi is the shield, Dark Yugi calls it Mind Shuffle as to beat Mind Scan, Dark Yugi comments about Yugi's skills and comparing to Pegasus.
After Pegasus's toons cards being defeated, Pegasus warns he'll start a shadow game, before starting, he informs a little how he came to create Duel Monsters/Magic and Wizards, where the inspiration came from, Shadow Game begins, Yugi being a human living being and young, his consciousness can't stand for long since his willpower/energy is giving the form to the monsters he summons, Dark Yugi rushes to take over, Yugi insisting to continue fighting, it goes like this until Yugi lose consciousness, his friends starts feeling scared their best friend could be almost dying, so Dark Yugi takes over, Pegasus planning this on purpose so he could read freely Dark Yugi's mind, again Pegasus starts cornering him, then his friends spirits starts blocking Pegasus's Mind Scan, from here on out Dark Yugi takes the lead of the duel to victory as Yugi slowly regaining his consciousness.

Key Points:

image.png image.png

I really liked this scene because Dark Yugi and Anzu are speaking up for Jounouchi he was able to win on his own, he should be proud of, Jounouchi slowly recognizing his growth as duelist, I do understand why, it was the final test of how much he learned in this tournament for him, he felt by winning this duel he passed test, to me his stage as a beginner has ended, he will start being intermediate level.
I think is interesting for them to think not be necessary, since both have a common goal, to not show more of their tactics to Pegasus would be the wise thing to do and...

Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.12-15 Part 9 ( Jounouchi VS Bandit Keith)

From here on out will be more around summaries first so I can get into details after, it's more organized like this....

Update (22/09/2018): I have been a lot faster because there is less key points to add and less to expand, the other reason for being motivated and determined that I finish the updates on Duelist Kingdom Arc before moving to another place, at least that's my intent, we have been in my sister's home temporarily so far, so when I move, I will be without internet for awhile, so there, but even without internet I can advance by writing drafts in a wordpad, so that then is ready to be updated when the internet is back... :).

Plot Summary:

It is time for the 2nd duel, Jounouchi didn't knew his card was stolen by Keith, once it came the time to show the card, Keith showed his (truly belonging to Jounouchi borrowed by Yugi), Jounouchi searching in his pockets, realizing the honor card isn't in his pockets, Crocket says he only has 5 minutes to find it, while going searching, Honda with Bakura and Mokuba on his piggyback.
Jounouchi frantically searched and nothing, Mai passes by and gives her honor right card wrapped in her handkerchief, Jounouchi feels grateful to her goes to the duel arena.
The duel starts, in the beginning is Keith taking the lead, then Jounouchi turned the game to his favor, then became a duel of back and forth, Pegasus paid close attention being 2 opposites against each other, he makes an interesting observation, Keith is cheating desperately to win while Jounouchi plays fair, the duel ends with Jounouchi's victory.

Key Points:

image.png

I like this scene about how the gang and Dark Yugi admit it was very difficult duel for Dark Yugi between each other, which shows not just humility from Dark Yugi side but also from the gang who tend to be quite self-righteous, but the gang were faster in becoming more down to earth than Dark Yugi, who still has some ways to go and in his inner monologue feeling very grateful for the duel with Mai which taught a very important lesson.

image.png

Besides the exchange between Jounouchi and Keith which is about Keith being disrespectful in putting his feet or boots on the table, Dark Yugi agrees for different reasons related to his passionate and intense ethic and honour as a duelist, Jounouchi's reasons comes from somewhere else, looking back in Volume 2 of the early volumes, the environment of his home, his alcoholic father does exactly the same thing Keith is doing here, if you look at Jounouchi's eyes and the way he says about he dislikes seeing the bottom of anybody's boots...:

"I don't like seeing the bottom of anybody'boots...but you're about as good as dog crap on the bottom of my shoe!"

Jounouchi is mostly referring indirectly to his own father and finds it as extremely rude and disrespectful independently the individual being a duelist or not, to be honest, I wholeheartedly agree with him, at minimum decency not put feet on the table, specially in someone's else house/location as basic good manners at the very least, Jounouchi is seeing behaviour and attitude in Keith is a strong resemblance to his father.

image.png

So subtle of Takahashi-sensei showing Bakura and Honda have successfully saved Mokuba, I do still wonder why Yami Bakura saved Honda to help saving Mokuba, it's plain strange or to help trigger some future events regarding Pegasus...Yami Bakura is certainly a mysterious villain character, we don't know what kind scheme he is playing by keeping a low profile...

image.png

This scene may be quite serious, but Bandit Keith thought about 5 minutes of waiting being the most useless five minutes of his life, it's hilarious and quite relatable, I know I have been waiting for an hour in a hairdresser, 30 mins at the hospital/clinic and social assistance, when you finish your test in a class and you have to wait until the bell rings, anyone had this kind of feeling before, pffft, so funny.

Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.12-15 Part 8 (Dark Yugi VS Mai)

Once again, summary of the duel only this time, because this duel is so important for Dark Yugi and Mai character development, so is just summary first then I'll get into the details.

Update (2109/2018): This is one of my favourite duels but also one of those I consider most important, I added 2 or 3 new key points and expanded some others.

Plot Summary:

We left off in the night before the fateful duels, the new day arrives, Yugi preparing himself, his grampa and him have an important talk and advice directly to Yugi only, Yugi's friends come to his room to pick him up to accompany him for the first duel of the day, Dark Yugi comes out once Yugi put on his millenium puzzle (someone is very eager...), they arrive at the duel arena, friends and the finalists who aren't playing yet go to the stands, the players who will be playing the first duel sit in their seats, Mai being an experienced duelist and card gamer in general, she was able to sense Dark Yugi wasn't focused on the opponent in front of him, the duel starts, from the beginning Mai starts dominating since Dark Yugi is being overconfident and arrogant and unfocused in the duel and doing mistakes which isn't like him when he is paying attention, Mai feeling a bit disappointed at him, she tells Dark Yugi why he is making so many mistakes, he keeps denying.
The duel starts becoming almost hopeless, Jounouchi expresses his surprise how Mai come to be so good, Mai then reveals what she learnt from her defeat against Jounouchi, Dark Yugi and friends were deeply impressed by Mai's answers specially her own answer to the riddle Jounouchi gave it to her as she did given during the duel to Dark Yugi, once Dark Yugi finds his own answer, he learns something about himself he was unaware of, once he understands and overcomes it, Dark Yugi focus is back on track.
The duel was on the same level this time around, Dark Yugi with some creative thinking, Dark Yugi when was about to win, Mai surrenders due to her love for her Harpies monsters not wanting to seeing get hurt, Dark Yugi surprised and expresses his gratitude to Mai cause of what he learnt in this duel with her, the first duel in the finals ends with Dark Yugi, Mai gives her final advices to him.

Key Points:

image.png image.png

This time around Sugoroku is talking directly at Yugi with his advices, he knows there is "two Yugis", but he knows more than he is letting in which will be noted later in the series (the prologue of the Memory World story arc), other interesting points about Sugoroku Mutou who has long life experience as in games, he speaks wisely to Yugi and Dark Yugi (it kinda seems that Sugoroku sees the spirit of a nameless pharaoh as his grandson as well, I think it's cute :3 ), what he says about pride is very interesting, he also sees pride as a negative trait, to be honest I think he is right, in fact coincides how I view pride.
Sugoroku expression he uses for advice about God of duelists, we know this part is just an expression, but still bugs me a little, it is to make it simpler to explain his knowledge on games and life, because it can be applicable to life regarding your attitude and choices affects certain matters like in this case the Duel Monsters (called originally in the japanese manga "Magic and Wizards") and some touch of Karma wisdom.
I think he is right, depending on the angle you see, it's true, cheaters is confined in a desperate cycle almost impossible to get out until it crashes (like creating a snowball rolling adding more and getting bigger until it breaks against a wall or tree, yeah, I can be pretty harsh), "cowards who fear defeat", afraid of moving on and keep trying even if you fail at something or lose a game or contest or competition or battle, "the arrogant drowning in their own powers", those are people blind to their own weaknesses, vulnerabilities and should be more down to earth who bases their confidence and self-worth on their skills and talents.

"Yugi...you don't know this, but I think you balance your other self's heart...When the other you becomes overconfident in his abilities, and loses his true heart...His sense of justice...That is when you must help, Yugi, that is when your heart is needed!"

It shows he is aware of being 2 entities to recognize their different traits like this, Dark Yugi obvious sense of justice and Yugi having a strong sense of morality and being far more down to earth than Dark Yugi, Yugi's grampa knows Yugi's strength better than anybody (after all was under his influence Yugi love for games).
If you read the whole manga or watched the whole anime, even though knowing about the spirit of the millenium puzzle being a pharaoh, why at this time and further refers to him as "the other Yugi"?
I think it's because he knows how attached Yugi is to the millenium puzzle since Yugi has this belief it was for completing the puzzle he got his wish of having a "true friend" became true, he knew he wouldn't be ready yet and trust his grandson to figure out and be ready on his own.

Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.12-15 Part 7 ( Pegasus VS Kaiba & Plot)

Once again it will be summary, since it has a duel, so there won't be a transcription, but I will add the aftermath of the duel, which is more important, but I'll want to mention about a little of Pegasus characterisation in his duel which reveals already a bit about his backstory...so let's start it!

(Update |18/09/2018| : it will get a bit faster for now because there is less to do...)

Plot Summary:

Yugi and friends plus the finalists reach the stands for the spectators to watch the duel between Kaiba and Pegasus, Kaiba proposes to duel through a different system to substitute the battle box, the duel disk, Pegasus being manipulative claims for not being athletic enough to throw the duel disc and needs a proxy to use it for him, in the panel thoughts of Pegasus, he admits it would make it difficult for him to read the mind of his opponent, Pegasus suggests Mokuba to be his proxy and also revealing by this time he had sealed Mokuba soul in card (when Pegasus was blackmailing for first time, Mokuba wasn't yet had been sealed), Kaiba being against it, so if Kaiba not wanting fighting Mokuba, they would duel the way Pegasus intended in the battle box, Kaiba accept his conditions...
This duel for Pegasus is to buy more time and get Kaiba out of the way, he is just playing around, even in the duel itself plainly proves it, created cards exclusively for himself, Kaiba lost the duel and Kaiba also gets to be sealed in a card, Yugi and Dark Yugi both are pissed off at him, Bandit Keith even feels more irritated for reading the mind of the opponent and also creating powerful cards just for himself, Jounouchi find as cheating, technically Pegasus is cheating by taking advantage of his privilege as the creator.
After the duel, the finalists and the guests will have a dinner, once they enter the dinner room, Yugi and co, recognizes Shadi in one of the paintings by the side of another the painting of a beautiful woman (Pegasus's lost love, Cecilia), they're shocked seeing a Shadi portrait there hinting Pegasus must have met him in the past, figuring it must be related to how Pegasus got his millenium eye, Ryou since have never met Shadi is shocked but also further confirming his suspicions.
The dinner starts with a entrée as a soup, popping out is a replica of the millenium eye for each of the finalists deciding in this order who are they up against, 1st Duel: Yugi VS Mai, 2nd Duel: Jounouchi VS Keith.
During dinner, Honda asks Dark Yugi to also save Mokuba and Kaiba souls, Dark Yugi accepts the requests but indicates other problem, their bodies are locked and guarded somewhere in the castle, Honda thoughts reflects he will be taking care of that, night falls they go to their rooms to sleep, Honda starts his rescue of the Kaiba brothers bodies, Ryou passes by from "sleepwalked" by Yami Bakura who also visited mysteriously Shadi portrait..., Ryou helps to distract the guards, so Honda was able to enter the dungeons entrance, he found Mokuba's body but was caught by one of the guards andlater saved by Yami Bakura, then moves to Bandit Keith succesfully stealing Jounouchi's "Honor King Right" borrowed by Dark Yugi/Yugi (since Dark Yugi realized Honor King Left meant to be sealed inside the card), he gets caught by Yugi from exiting Jounouchi's room, Yugi starts inquiring but Keith punches him seeing Yugi standing up is about to punch him again, stopped by Jounouchi, protects Yugi, Yugi get's first aid kit treatment by Anzu, they have an important talk...

Key Points:

image.png image.png
image.png

This situation of Mokuba being sealed in a card and Pegasus using Mokuba's "vessel"/"body" proxy to play on Kaiba's terms could have been prevented if Kaiba wasn't so prideful and so dogmatic on his views and didn't treated games in such a black and white manner, Kaiba could have saved him if he lost with dignity and gracefully, actually he had more chances of saving him, because after the duel, Mokuba wasn't still sealed in the card once he got the results is when he prepared himself to do so, because Pegasus would be occupied with watching duels, all it was up to Yugi and Dark Yugi to get Kaiba Corporation back to Kaiba, save his grandpa and to help donate for Jounouchi's sister eyes surgery operation, even Yugi and Dark Yugi burden would lessen a bit as well.
He should also have predictd Pegasus would find a way to not duel under Kaiba's own condition but his own.
Curiously in Pegasus inner monologue, he does admit the duel disk would put him in a disadvantage in not just by throwing the disk being a bit athletic but also the distance between the plays would make it difficult do the mind scan, he would be enable to but not as easily he have been doing so far...which shows even "mind scan" weaknesses...Kaiba wasn't far figuring it out.
Finally I had this thought I have been having out.

There is some interesting points about Pegasus I want to bring up...when Pegasus is about to show his cartoon cards...
The first 2 panels ensembles above reveals something interesting about his love for cartoons and how expressed here is connected to his experience of losing a loved one, for anyone who have watched the anime and read the manga knows he was traumatized by his loss of his lover Cecilia, when he says:

"To this day, they run around in the little garden inside my heart...They never betrayed me...And they can never die..."

With a black background behind him and as he continues, the next panel shows some kind of darkness behind him, his darkness being connected through the cartoons and his lover related to death, this shows how deeply it scarred him but this messy? it's something else which will be discussed in the end of Duelist Kingdom arc...
How in this section of the manga makes Pegasus connected to the main story and his character?

image.png image.png

I find this particular inner monologue Pegasus very interesting, it's about the players memories even in their subconscious, as a way for the author to explain to the readers as to why this tactic Kaiba is using from the card straight from the deck won't work on Pegasus as someone who can read minds even after himself confirming it, the reason why the tactic won't help Kaiba is related to between the subconscious and conscious of the mind, Pegasus knows when players assemble their decks, they memorize every card even if subsconsciously, it's seems is something he learned over time when using his millennium eye a lot, with this he knows every single card in Kaiba's deck and has counter-moves, which raises the question of how long has he been wielding the millennium eye?

image.png image.png

Kaiba's biggest weakness and flaw being his pride and big ego, but also the funniest trait of Kaiba, you can be mad at me all you want, I still laugh hard at this, is funny(the pathetic toon part) and almost cute Kaiba attachment to his Blue Eyes, Pegasus recognises it and seems to be a bit moved, he was being sincere on this part, the few traits we can get from Kaiba besides being very prideful, arrogant and extreme, he is very sensitive, intense and hot-headed about his views.

image.png image.png
image.png

I consider an interesting reference and info about Kaiba's deck being around mostly consisted of powerful monsters, making his deck being a power deck, mind you, it's the kind of deck I dislike the most, mainly cause Kaiba being about power in his strategy is  his greatest strength and so is his greatest weakness, Kaiba power deck also reflects very well his personality, views and beliefs about games, which is militaristic for the time being.
Kaiba is not just guilty, himself asking for "forgiveness" from Mokuba is not just from this time, but from previous times, the real Kaiba couldn't save Mokuba from the corrupted Kaiba (from Gozaburo Kaiba influnces) as the vessel/body of Mokuba was crying which I think it has to do with memory of the body without Mokuba even being inside his body.
Now here is a Pegasus inner monologue:

"If only you could have gone to heaven...you could have enjoyed a reunion...heh heh..."

...Did he intended to kill Mokuba after if Kaiba died in the helicopter? it does sound the case...

image.png image.png
image.png

It's easy to tell who is more reserved and vocal about their emotions and thoughts, though both Yugi and Dark Yugi are very reserved in personality, but Yugi being shy and having a quiet personality is more reserved than Dark Yugi, on the other hand, Dark Yugi is way more vocal and expressive about his thoughts except for a few things where he is way more reserved, is it something he is aware of himself ? or hides it himself for protection? I could understand but does Dark Yugi do it for the right reasons?
I find interesting Dark Yugi speak up for Yugi most of the time, even after the duel with Kaiba, he seems even more angrier and his righteous personality shows up, an heroic trait, a cheesy one though.
Speaking about Dark Yugi, let's go a little further on him with a next few panels...

image.png image.png

Dark Yugi/Atem, how can he be calm and intense  at the same time? Even Jounouchi feels a bit overwhelmed, it's kinda of mystery and cheeky, thumps up for his determination and being spirited, this scene is before the dinner.
It makes me wonder how it looks like he is not even thinking about his duel with Kaiba, not even a bit shaken regarding what could happen if he attacked, maybe even angrier at Pegasus, hmmm, I wonder or is being angrier and put blame at Pegasus just to crutch to make himself feel better, it's a possibility, with his ego and big sense of righteousness plus pride is very likely, sure Pegasus is at fault for forcing them to duel each other, but not for  Kaiba doing something stupid and crazy and Dark Yugi almost going for it if wasn't for Yugi.

image.png

As an honourable mention, I love and find it very funny how Anzu indirectly brings out of how much of a bad host Pegasus is, stating this is the first time they've fed them properly in this tournament 😂, thanks for Anzu not forgetting to bring up...

 image.png  image.png
image.png image.png

These panels I'm showing, Dark Yugi is pretty sharp in noticing Pegasus may not be fully related to Shadi, since the main objective of Pegasus of this tournament is to get Kaiba Corporation, Dark Yugi considered and acknowledges there is a connection to Shadi and Shadi is a connection to the other millenium items, as reminder to the readers and indicating Pegasus has connection and has a role in the main story despite being the main villain of this story arc (Duelist Kingdom) but not fully connected, then what role is it?
There will be a chance in the future to write when it comes...
This particular panels, they're foreshadowing the end of the Duelist Kingdom story arc, also hinting Pegasus will explain how he is connected to the main story of the series, I love these kind of main story foreshadowing, it shows how far Kazuki Takahashi was thinking ahead towards the end of the story, also once this story arc is done, the middle stage is coming as well...

image.png image.png
image.png

We had some interesting characterization of Honda when he requests Dark Yugi to save Kaiba and Mokuba, since Honda feels he owes Mokuba for saving him in Death-T...
Honda is mostly right without it's flaws, yes, Kaiba was fighting for someone who is precious to him just like them, hypothetically speaking, if wasn't for Mokuba, would Honda still ask to save him or Dark Yugi save him? It's just their righteous judgement, the person has to be fighting for someone they love to even consider of saving someone if they did terrible things to you... even if Kaiba did terrible things to them because he's extreme, it's still no reason to let him die or decay, would be good to your conscience to begin with? besides doing this is considered negligence of someone's life and nowadays is considered a crime.
But Yugi would with or without Mokuba, he understands best being kind-hearted as he is and being someone who can't ignore someone's life in danger rather is friend, acquaintance or even an enemy or the most horrible person, Yugi understands preservation of life, this is one of Yugi's biggest strengths, people tend to underestimate it and view as weakness, I don't think is the case, it takes more character, conviction and courage to apply this belief, because it isn't simple, respect all life just isn't simple, someone who believes in preservation of life is an admirable and inspirational trait for me.

image.png image.png image.png

Jounouchi is the kind of person who holds a grudge, funny enough, Kaiba is the same in this aspect too, they don't forget, which isn't healthy, I'm someone who holds a grudge too, so I know, but here after Honda's request, Kaiba accepts but Dark Yugi was willing to do so even without Honda requesting for the way he was very vocal in his determination in defeating Pegasus and his sense of justice but Dark Yugi brings up an interesting problem, such about the situation of their bodies, nothing is guaranteed with Pegasus from they have seen so far, but says he can only help with cards, so Honda goes to his inner monologue that he takes care in saving their bodies, which means Honda has something in mind...

image.png

This particular scene is so mysterious and intriguing, even Yami Bakura knows him, one wonder what's their connection when you reach this part, for the first time, when is revealed at the last stage of the main story, making Yami Bakura the main villain. he is an very important character to the main story to not take it lightly like Shadi.

image.png image.png

I think scene is very important in Jounouchi's character development, he was a bit of a delinquent and got into fights a lot in the past and is very good at it, he can easily beat Keith in hand-to-hand combat, he used this time around a little to protect Yugi, but the way he states in the last panel I mention, how he chooses to beat Keith for real in a duel, we can see recently he has been getting less often into fights, he currently only uses it to defend himself and his loved ones but prefers through a card game if there is an option, when is a battle without physically hurting someone, which is one of the main messages regarding games in the series from Kazuki Takahashi as the story progresses...Jounouchi, Dark Yugi and Yugi embody this message, but Jounouchi is done more bluntly because of his personality, bit by bit, Jounouchi being hugely influenced by Yugi, slowly coming to be against violence as well, so his character development is very interesting not just in cards skills, on a personal level as well learning from his friends (Yugi and Dark Yugi, Anzu and Honda).

image.png image.png image.png

Same for Yugi as it was in the previous post, I think this is one of the most important turn on his character development, when he starts deciding to be more active in the fights, finally Yugi is more conscious of being "sheltered" and doesn't like it, he does have some inferiority complex not just for Dark Yugi, Anzu and Jounouchi as well but more towards Dark Yugi, it seems when Jounouchi asked him why he felt so inferior really got to him (thank you, Jounouchi) and decides to become stronger, he can't stay this way forever, the current reason for now...I don't like these cliché in almost every shounen manga (to protect the girl he likes), but there is deeper reasons which wasn't explored yet by Yugi.
In my opinion, Yugi is already very strong (even I think his skills are on par with Dark Yugi or is already bit stronger) but he just doesn't have much chances to put into practice, to test it, to challenge and prove himself. Don't worry Yugi, you will have more chances soon!
Anzu's reactions to Yugi's confession about his current self are interesting, she blushes a little when Yugi admits feeling annoyed being always protected and helped by her and the others, a bit surprised by his decision and smiles, I think she feels a bit moved seeing him growing, from a childhood friend perspective is a sweet moment, peachshiping is growing on me everytime I reread it, very slowly (I didn't ship them for a very long time, for years in fact).

image.png

Lastly, it's very curious as to why Yami Bakura is helping Honda... probably as an attempt "to regain trust" or trying to pretend to be Ryou, but as we can see, Honda is suspecting isn't Ryou but Yami Bakura, you have to give credit that Honda is very sharp and what is the meaning of the expression "so dawn broke", it doesn't make much sense, I think is related to be kinda late since "dawn broke" means when the sun rises, to help him, still curious though...

Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.12-15 Part 6 (Duelist Pride Part 3)

We'll start with the aftermath, many scenes and panels are very important to discuss...

(Update |14/09/2018|: I'm kinda sick - expectoration and also seems that I'm about having a cold, so the next posts will take longer but there will less changes after this, until I go start updating the 7 early volumes)

Plot Summary:

As we know, we left off of Yugi starting to cry after his loss and Kaiba quietly observing...
Pegasus is reported by one his henchmen about the result of the duel between Dark Yugi and Kaiba as Kaiba winning the duel and seems to have something in mind prepared for Kaiba in case he won...
The aftermath of the duel, Yugi is still crying about and talks his feeling and thoughts about the duel as he found as very disagreeable with himself and as to why he stopped Dark Yugi, Kaiba states his militaristic view on games and life, criticises Yugi's choice, then Yugi's friends go to his defense, specially Anzu and criticises Kaiba's view and pointing it's fallacies, Kaiba feeling slightly irritated by her extremely valid counter-argument, leaves saying to Yugi that he will defeat Pegasus....he has a bit of a chit-chat with Bandit Keith on the way inside the castle...
Yugi is feeling quite down after his loss, but his friends don't give up on him and go search for a new opponent together, but sadly the remaining duelists on the island already left besides the 4 finalists and Kaiba, Jounouchi seeing Yugi in a tight spot, he is willing to give 5 of his star chips to Yugi, so Yugi has a chance to save his grandpa's life, but Yugi rejects it because Jounouchi fought for those stars to save his sister from going blind, the Mai appears and she has 16 stars chips and willing to give back 5 of them to Yugi so they can have their duel in the last stage, Yugi initially refuses thinking this is what Dark Yugi would want, then Jounouchi speaks up his mind to Yugi and calls him out in his current attitude, with some convincing from Jounouchi and Mai, Yugi accepts the stars and they enter the castle...

Key Points:

image.png

We see here, Pegasus holding 4 cards and then picking one and talking to himself to inner monologue Kaiba did a good job and fullfill his deal that he will duel against him, but in a shadow game, in the next post we see what he means, he kinda of knows what Kaiba is thinking from a distance even without the millennium eye, that fact it involves a shadow game, it means there will be supernatural means besides the "mind scan"...we will see in the next post...

image.png image.png
image.png

I find Bandit Keith's reaction to the result of this duel very interesting, Dark Yugi could have won but since Kaiba was foolishly willing to commit suicide because he was about to lose (since he doesn't know how to lose with grace), the others worried run to him because he was starting to cry, then Yugi tells why didn't continue his attack, Yugi thought Kaiba was serious about committing suicide (he definitely was serious), Jounouchi then realises that Yugi let Kaiba win as he was understanding what Yugi did, Anzu understood and you can tell she agreed with his choice, if she thought Kaiba was being serious thinking the duel was getting out of control...

image.png image.png
image.png

To be honest, I think Yugi was very brave in making this choice, people usually think that being "coldhearted" is hard and "doing the right thing is easy by being goody two shoes", in fact is the other way around, in critical situations we humans tend to be selfish and try to save our own skin - for yourself, but the right thing is harder, much harder, there is a reason why through history of humanity struggled to do the right thing and we still do.
Yugi characterisation time, I really wanna write about it, I think this scene is a good chance, actually this post is a good chance for it, in this scene expresses Yugi in a emotional way about his principles, not just as a gamer, duelist but as a person as well...

"I'm scared...I'm scared of this game! and of the other me!"

It expresses, Yugi values life in general, no matter who is it, he is against violence and taking someone's life or ignore someone in danger for him is something out of question, people would think is weak but isn't.
People would think at first it implied Yugi showing his cowardice and weakness just for saying he is scared of where this was going if he didn't stop it and for stopping it. but is it really?
What is cowardice? the dictionary says "lack of bravery", it's true but in what situation would you call someone for doing something cowardly?
Would you think is a weakness about Yugi's choice?
I don't think so...I think Yugi was scared for very good reasons, it wasn't just Mokuba and his Grampa, it was Kaiba's life (for his recklessness)...
