Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.32 Part 3/4 (The Prelude of the World of Memory)

It took so long to write the previous post, 3 weeks to be more precise, which is impressive, with 47 panels ensembles, it kinda is to be expected, also this story arc is heavy plot focused, there is only two duels and it happens in the last two volumes, so yes, it will be a long journey.

Plot Summary:

The moment Dark Yugi present the god cards to the stone slab, a huge light from the symbol of the millenium puzzle engraved in the stone slab shines brightly, as this happens, Dark Yugi as if pushed by an invisible rope to be transported to another dimension, the world of memory...
Yugi felt Dark Yugi being pushed to somewhere else and can't sense his presence inside the millenium puzzle, everyone is quite shocked except Bobasa...

Inside the World of Memory, Dark Yugi successfully enters but is immediately turn asleep in a throne surrounded by six people, himself and these people dressed in tunic and robe...a short old man with his mouth covered calls to Dark Yugi as pharaoh, as he wakes up, Dark Yugi is shocked and questions where he is, the short old man who calls him pharaoh shocked at seeing him asleep in the throne, Dark Yugi confuses the short old man with Yugi's grandfather and calls him granpa, the short old man introduces himself as his vizier (a very important official in Ancient Egypt) called Siamun Muran, as Dark Yugi sinking in and trying to absorb this new situation as Pharaoh and dressed as such, he also notices the six people close to him besides the vizier, they all have millenium items, as Siamun explains who they are as priests and their duties, one of them to punish evil doers, a grave robber happened to be caught, who tried to rob the royal tomb of the former king is judged by the priests who wield the millenium items.

In the museum, as the others are still shocked by Yugi not being able to sense Dark Yugi inside the puzzle and them becoming aware as Bobasa reminds them that he is inside the World of Memory, he explains where, why and what is happening to Dark Yugi and he can help them to take them to him by starting to enter the millenium puzzle...while in the World of Memory, there is a discussion between the priests, Dark Yugi while still sinking in and absorbing all the new information, the priest wielder of millenium tauk warns them of a powerful evil shadow coming closer to the palace for picking up a disturbing future...

Key Points:

image.png image.png

Okay, this is tough, in this scene it looks like maybe at first when Dark Yugi starts becoming separated from Yugi to up, but is actually the other direction being separated from his partner, it is related to the millenium puzzle, I will go in more detail, as we move to the next key points until what is actually happening explained... (Please don't forget to notice the millenium puzzle symbol in the stone slab shined at the same time as the millenium puzzle itself)

When Yugi reveals as shocked and worried that he is gone because he can't sense him:

"He's not in the puzzle...or in my heart...I don't know where he is!"

The shock they received, for each has a different meanings, for two of them is expectation of worst case scenario they might have hold, being Yugi and Anzu, while Honda and Jounouchi probably didn't speculated as much, is more shock as pure shock.
Yugi isn't completely wrong, but he isn't completely right either, it's much more complex than that...

Even Yami Bakura is shocked as well, wondering and slightly confused with what's happening, Yugi is panicking because of the shock of not feeling his presence inside the puzzle that he forgotten where he is as Bobasa reminds him, then Yugi reaction's by realising he forgotten for a moment due to the shock and calm down a little after Bobasa reminded them, it's very understandable and a little relatable (the sensation is similar when you get lost or lose someone or group from being separated because of crowded places).

image.jpg image.jpg

As it states in the panels on left, Dark Yugi is going to experience his memories first-hand literally, when he arrives at the World of Memory, you can tell is like he entered in some dimension, an important detail to remember is that Dark Yugi spirit is still wearing the puzzle, when Yugi isn't, he also isn't, if Yugi is wearing the puzzle, he is also wearing the puzzle as spirit, this dimension called World of Memory is connected to the millenium puzzle as it implied in the first key point, this dimension might be the true form of the maze inside the puzzle and we can't know for sure but this phrase...implies it...

"He must travel into the maze of long-lost memories..."

We will go into more detail about this, as we advance through the story and it's expansion (Dark Side of Dimensions movie).

image.png image.png

I love this scene so much, it's so much fun to read and at the same time appreciating the fine details of Dark Yugi's get up when he was a pharaoh, how Takahashi keep these details so impressive, it's strange it starts him sleeping in the throne, I love Dark Yugi's reaction to this brand new situation and information (it makes me always laugh without fail and quite cute too :3, you see him making so many different expressions, it's very amusing to read), you can see Dark Yugi is quite awkward.
The man by his side, presents himself as the vizier and his name Siamun Muran, it's funny Dark Yugi at first confused with Yugi's grandpa, but when Siamun said his name, you can tell by his expression from this information, his name stuck and seemed to him to sound familiar, speaking of familiarity...Siamun, Siamun, where have read it mentioned this name? , from the time Dark Yugi, or should we say when the spirit of the pharaoh called Yugi's grandpa by this character above name, Siamun, now this time around is Dark Yugi with no memories of Siamun calling him grandpa, it's like completing a circle that Siamun and Sugoroku are connected (I don't really think Siamun is Sugoroku past life for a certain reason by the end of the series, I will explain why when I reach the end).

image.jpg image.png

It's still sinking in for absorbing just new information and situation at once, despite himself knowing he is the spirit of the pharaoh, he should expect something like this, he didn't fully grasped what Bobasa meant to say about Dark Yugi will experience his memories, he was being literal in every sense of the word...by the way, the panel on the left, it's so gorgeously drawn, Takahashi-sensei is really stepping up his game in this story arc, I can't help but be impressed, expect me to mention this a lot of times.
It's so funny (laughing hard while writing this post) seeing Dark Yugi having a hard time taking this all in and going awkward, when the man is on his knees and bowing in front of him calling Dark Yugi:

"O great pharaoh...it is time."

Dark Yugi is surely taken aback when the first two people talking to him for addressing him as pharaoh (so funny), because he is feeling so awkward in this new situation, he is asking the best person who can explain what is happening in this moment and speaking in slangish manner, he almost called the vizier "grandpa" again, the "guys" he is referring to...

image.png image.png

Dark Yugi is quite shocked, other six people close to his throne and they all have millenium items, then vizier Siamun explains they are the high priests chosen by their respective millenium items and part of the royal court, one of them is very worried about the pharaoh wondering if he is tired (the one with the millenium ring), as Dark Yugi gathering info about his new surroundings to understand the situation and is how different the millenium items are used in modern time while here is for different purposes, as he questions and ready to learn more about his current and new circumstances.

image.png image.png

This is happening when the high priests are judging a grave robber by using the millenium items as explained by Siamun, the millenium items are used to judge "sinners", Dark Yugi questions it, since he has knowledge that the millenium items consists evil intelligence, therefore it must have a dark secret...
We have seen the millenium key in action before by entering someone's room of soul and manipulate it, but this time shows the other way you can use it, in a way he is seeing it and what's inside it without literally enter the room of soul of the grave robber...(the one using the Millenium key here is called Shada)

image.png image.png

The high priest with the millenium eye, Akhenaden (he is a very important character), we are seeing another power  from the millenium eye besides reading people's minds by will, he can reveal the true form of the monster inside the man...
Now into the explanation of Siamun in this scene:

"Anger, hatred...those negative emotions create monsters in men's souls...eventually those ka will take over that person, making them commit crimes...breaking the divine order of Ma'at...increasing their power by creating more rage and sorrow."

This will be a bit of a challenge to explain, I'll try my best, Siamun is saying that negative emotions create monsters in men's souls and these "monsters" ka take over the individual and make the person commit crimes by breaking the "divine" laws of the kingdom and giving more power to these "ka" is by creating more negative emotions, I only slightly disagree, these emotions still belongs to the individual, the "monsters" doesn't appear at random, these "monsters"/ka are a manifestation of what mostly dominates who they are, in other words, when the men are taken over and driven by their negative emotions, then they will do crimes, to make these manifestations of their negative emotions more powerful is by creating more negative emotions, after all emotions are reactions and responses to present experiences based on one's individual life experience, personality and free will, therefore sometimes influence one's actions (the emotions, they're not always the driven force behinds one's action).

image.png image.jpg

High Priest Seto, the one who appears engraved in the stone slab facing Dark Yugi and wields the Millenium Rod, the way the Rod is used here, it's very interesting, he controls the monster(ka) of the grave robber in order to seal it in a stone slab, the grave robber doesn't die if is sealed, because is a manifestation of his negative emotions, not his soul...in other words, they are "exorcising" or "removing" the grave robber's manifestation of negative emotions and seal it away in the stone...
As one would expect, priest Seto is quite similar to Kaiba, as we move on the story, it becomes clear their differences and similarities...

20a.png

Bobasa is clarifying what happened and why Yugi can't sense his presence, Dark Yugi is still in the millenium puzzle but the stone slab and the god cards has took him to the world of pharaoh's sealed memories, his lost memories residing in the millenium puzzle, it's interesting to think Bobasa refers to as world of memory/Dark Yugi memories, as if a dimension was created specifically for this purpose...(expect touching on this a lot when I make thoughts and observations of Dark Side of Dimensions movie).

image.png  image.png

I find interesting Anzu did come to a conclusion and theory and wanted to confirm with Bobasa...

"Then, no matter where he goes, he'll still remember us?"

She is wanting to confirm, she was concerned in this moment as friend, just one of the moments that indicates she is seeing him more as friend, there will be more moments like these where I touch on her growth in about her friendship with Dark Yugi.
 As Bobasa confirms...

"Yes, but the the world of memories is built of events that actually happened 3000 years ago...and so the course of events is already determined...the pharaoh must relive his cruel fate once more."

As Bobasa states, Dark Yugi will experience his memories being replayed in every sense, "reliving" them, despite of remembering the recent memories when he was "reset-ed" and when Anzu wonders what Bobasa meant by "his cruel fate"...
Yugi immediately understood it was to experience his death a second time, because Yugi is so conscious of his vessel's duty, he is the one most conscious of Dark Yugi being a spirit of a deceased pharaoh with unfinished business to take care of before going to afterlife...as Bobasa explains by understanding what Yugi was thinking, in order to Dark Yugi understand well his lost memories, he has to re-experience them, including his death...
The general gang reaction, most of them were shock, two of them were more of shock and amazement in a bad sense (Honda and Jounouchi), for Anzu was a mix of shock and realisation, Yugi was understanding because he is the most conscious and aware...
Yami Bakura wasn't shocked but interested for understanding an important information and reveal that can be used for his plans to achieve his goals.

image.png image.png

Look at Jounouchi's growth in his smarts and sharpness, I'll give praise for that, even Honda was deeply impressed which is nice to see, even Bobasa was slightly impressed as well, what he meant by before when he introduced himself, the gang will also go to the world of memory, and Bobasa tells them that there is way being through entrance of Yugi's soul, when Yugi wondered by that, not because he didn't remember that he has access to Dark Yugi's soul through the millenium puzzle, but wondering how everyone will go inside the millenium puzzle...as Bobasa reveals in the last panel on the right, with the millenium key, which reveal to us, the millenium key can take more than one person to someone's room of soul...

image.png

Bobasa explains why in Yugi's soul, since is only there where you can have access to go inside the puzzle, he reveals the true door being hidden in the maze of the puzzle as from when Shadi was searching in Dark Yugi's room of soul is the entrance to the world of pharaoh's memories...when we reach this point, I'll explain why was done this way...now is their turn to find it to play their roles inside the world of memory (which will be discussed in the next post).

image.png

Priest Seto is extreme and dark as Kaiba...-.-", Priest Akhenaden is right, it's true he is a "sinner", a criminal, but there is no need to go to extreme punishment, besides he didn't get the chance to steal anything as he didn't found nothing there and he is a thief, no need to take this crime so extremely serious, Priest Akhenaden was quite fair with the punishment, seven years of hard labor, this kind of focus, implies he is and will be a very important character...

image.png image.png

Now, we have introduction to one of the priests, Priest Mahado, he looks familiar (I wonder from where...), the one who wields the Millenium Ring, being blamed for not filling his duty properly since his duty is to protect the Royal tombs, according to Priest Seto, it has been frequent of appearances of grave robbers, which seems to be a very important task by serving the pharaoh...
Here is the interesting reveal about certain limitations of these magical artifacts:

"The number of ka nesting in people's souls has vastly increased. I can't detect every sinner and every evil intention...However, for the last few days the auguries I receive from the millenium ring have been extremely erratic..."

What is implied in this scene, as powerful as this magical artefacts are which seems to be useful tools for judgement of justice, they have limitations, they're not omnipotent or omniscient, if it detects many grave robbers at the same time in different Royal Tombs, the millenium ring would be unstable and erratic...which seems to be the case for Priest Mahado making it hard to find all the grave robbers...
Also is interesting to note that the number of ka(monsters) in people's souls increasing, well no one can control and remove every other people's negative emotions with a clap of fingers , the one has to be in charge of them and cause them to appear, it's the individual himself...since these ka are born from people negative emotions (or emotions and desires in general).

"It is the duty of the six priests to protect the pharaoh! Both in this world...and in the tombs where they away the world beyond!"

Priest Seto is emphasising the importance of protecting the pharaoh, the current one as much the deceased ones, how they mention "afterlife" is named many times as "the world beyond", it was how the ancients mentioned as, I do think the name is a bit long, it must be why nowadays we call afterlife, "the world beyond death", since is mostly unknown to us...

image.png

Dark Yugi is having a hard time getting used to be addressed as pharaoh (it's very amusing, note the drop sweat in his hair) and being treated with such reverence, being bowed, making him feel quite awkward and bit embarasssed about it, I want you to look into this detail, about priest Seto looking at priest Mahado (when he asks permission the pharaoh to enlist more troops to protect the valley of the kings) and then looking at the pharaoh and while before he was blaming Priest Mahado, it won't be the first time he complains about him...(he seems to have a problem with priest Mahado...).

image.png

Dark Yugi is feeling quite overwhelmed by all this new information and being called pharaoh, I don't censor him, it's a lot to take in, also there is the manner of speaking making it a bit hard to understand, for someone who has knowledge of the modern world, advanced science and technology, the manner of speaking is different too, so it's difficult to connect the dots and see the similarities between...for second he considered if this was a dream, then came to the right conclusion...

image.png

Then he remembered what Bobasa said about going inside the world of memory and facing his destiny once more, after taking in all this new info, he realised fairly quickly to be the world of memory, even after realising with all this new information and being all at once, it will take a bit of more time to sinking in...
The vizier worried seeing the pharaoh upset (I'll change a lot between Dark Yugi and pharaoh depending on the perspective) thinking it might be because of the invasion of the former pharaoh's tomb (his father), 3000 years ago must have been for this reason, in this case is being Dark Yugi accepting and assessing his current situation, so Siamun as an effort to cheer up the pharaoh (Dark Yugi still kinda jumps when they address him as pharaoh).

image.png image.png

For the vizier Siamun, taking personal responsibility to design Dark Yugi's tomb, Dark Yugi was shocked at first (as people might know, the royal tombs were build when the pharaohs were still alive because of how long it took to build them and time it takes for a body become dust), then regretted later because he had to listen to his long explanation about the progress of the construction of his tomb (it would explain Dark Yugi's bored expression xD, he makes so many different expressions when trying to adapt to the current new situation, it's so fun to see), the most interesting part is he mentions the former pharaoh, being Dark Yugi's father, pharaoh Akhenamkhanen (what a long name...), and his father's tomb was prototype for Dark Yugi's tomb, it's curious his tomb is receiving more than common special treatment for royalty, even for a pharaoh, if was prototype for Dark Yugi's tomb, this prototype was being made probably before Dark Yugi was born...even getting the best of the best team and best traps from the vizier himself...
By the way, viziers in Ancient Egypt are commonly part of the royal family, so Siamun must be a relative to Dark Yugi and his father...(my headcanon he is the father of Dark Yugi's mother, it would explain a lot such special treatment, because would be his grandson, I know he said he was never called by a name "grandpa", it's a modern diminutive term of grandfather, he seemed to think "grandpa" was a normal name instead for what it means, so this headcanon can count, it's one of my crazy headcanons).

image.png

The priest wearing the millenium tauk/necklace is called Isis, telling her millenium item picked up a disturbing future and warns them that an evil shadow approaching the palace (I wonder who might be...) with incredible powers of heka (as it informs above, it means magic in egyptian, pretty interesting)...
