Thoughts&Observations | Mangá Vol.20-26 Part 11 (Battle Ship Break Part 1)

Sorry for taking long to post anything, I have been a little busy, because I moved to a new home, house to an apartment, it's quite tiring and I didn't had internet for a week and a few days more, but I used the days without internet to still write a draft for the blog in document text :p.
This post will be relatively small, compared to others, specially the plot summary, I will be covering volume duelist 17 (japanese print volume 24 and bukodan 14 or 15?)
The first semi-final break, it's actually quite small but the duel that is about to come will be huge (be ready for the next post...)

Plot Summary:

After Ryou Bakura to be sent to his room and being under medical care, Dark Yugi has a moment of reflection about the recent match with Yami Bakura, noticing similarities between them, feeling down about himself while Yugi heeded this, he recalls Dark Yugi their differences in their circumstances despite being almost the same which helped Dark Yugi's mind feel more at ease and they switch minds.
Yugi rushes to Ryou's room to see how he is going, there is an important discussion between Yugi and his friends about the recent duel and how intense it was for Dark Yugi, as the referee calls the players to go to the meeting room for the lottery who will be playing in the next match...
The next duel will be between "Marik"Rishid and Jounouchi...

Key Points:

In this moment of reflection, Dark Yugi thinks he is no different from Yami Bakura when it comes to protect their hosts, he starts to doubt himself and starts feeling a bit down, what he doesn't realize there is huge differences, Yugi points out their similarities which amounts to two same circumstances, two minds in one body and the spirit protecting their host, Yugi thinks it's a little different...

Reminding him that Yugi helps Dark Yugi of his own volition for himself to becoming more independent and stronger and for Dark Yugi to not spend an eternity in the puzzle.
However there is more differences that overlaps with the similarities, for starters Dark Yugi does protect his host because it's a responsibility he takes very seriously and guided by his sense of justice and this was before he knew he was a spirit who lost his memories, even though he knows he needs Yugi's help to regain his memories, his sense of responsibility as spirit guardian still remains and he doesn't do it selfishly and there is genuine care in protecting his host and respects his host decisions, while Yami Bakura, he only protected his host for selfish goals and doesn't care much for his host unless is close to die or when he can still be a convenient tool.
Next section of differences, Dark Yugi and Yami Bakura have very different personalities except maybe their big ego, conceited and tend to be overconfident, but how they direct these personality traits are different, Dark Yugi ego and overconfidence is usually displayed during duels, the conceited part sometimes but mostly bases on his righteous trait, while Yami Bakura is more egoistical.
The most glaring one besides the one Yugi mentioned is the bond between the spirit and the host is huge, Yugi and Dark Yugi case is a very strong bond because there was a lots of trust building to a point that they became a team and very close friends (if they were a tag team, I think they would be pretty much unbeatable), for Yami Bakura and Ryou Bakura case...Ryou is clear he is very attached to the millenium ring but not to the evil spirit that resides within, however Ryou only give in to him when Yami Bakura persuaded him to help his friends to get out of the maze in Duelist Kingdom, so he could take control over Ryou again...
Now as for this scene itself, I really like it, you see when Yugi reminded Dark Yugi what makes the difference in their case, cheered him up greatly and also when Yugi tells him to rest, you see the "heh..." with an expression of relief probably starting to realize he relies on Yugi's kindness and glad that he isn't alone in his quest to regain his lost memories.

In this scene when Yugi starts to take over, Anzu notices and calls to him, Yugi responds:

"Oh...'scuse me Anzu... I was talking to my other self..."

I find it curious, because I can't be sure if was because Anzu interrupted a conversation between him and Dark Yugi or simply because he just finished his talk with Dark Yugi, it's not really clear, we would continue seeing the rest of the conversation if he was being interrupted so I think is related to the talk they had just finished. (this small detail has been bugging me because it wasn't clear, it could be the translation)
Also Anzu's reaction is strange as if clueless, she is very aware they talk with each otther, so it's weird, then later is explained...

As you can see, it was because Marik was controlling Anzu at the time, since she was the one who picked up the Millenium Ring before Dark Yugi switched to Yugi, which means Marik is ignorant of some things regarding Yugi and Dark Yugi case, usually in their situation, the host doesn't remember or has control, he targets Yugi as well because Yugi holds the duty to recover pharaoh's memories as the pharaoh vessel, so it gets in the way of his revenge, he doesn't know is that the pharaoh spirit and the vessel get along very well, they work together, they talk to each other and they're friends, while Anzu knows all of this and why it was a bit strange being clueless when Yugi said he was talking to Dark Yugi, the clueless part represented Marik not knowing of this.

image.png image.png

Yugi got most points right, but you could see something didn't fit right even for him, he is considering some possibilities but isn't revealing all of it, he is giving confirmed information such as there was three minds inside Bakura, the original and the other two (Yami Bakura and Marik).
You can see in terms of skill and the duel itself, Yugi knows Dark Yugi was going to win but was interrupted from switching Yami Bakura to Ryou who was severely injured, then Dark Yugi would forfeit the match, Yugi doesn't really consider Yami Bakura protecting his host by taking the blow as letting Dark Yugi win...
An interesting detail I want to mention is that Yugi now refers Dark Yugi separately to the others as "we" which means he is acknowledging to others that there is two minds in his body, when he uses "I" to represent Dark Yugi is probably because referring as "my other self" or "the spirit of the millenium puzzle" would be too long and also sharing his own identity with Dark Yugi for the time being until he restores his own memories and discovers his own real name.

image.png image.png

What Yugi is thinking about the event of Yami Bakura choosing to shield Ryou, Yugi has already figure it out Yami Bakura and Marik were working together, he thinks Marik knew what Dark Yugi was thinking, in a way to make him lose on purpose. it's true he predicted his moves well, he's right about that, but stating in his own thoughts implying Yami Bakura didn't, hmmm, Yami Bakura is more of an improviser than thinking ahead when comes to his dueling methods besides his main focus wasn't in this tournament and Yami Bakura would need Dark Yugi to advance in the tournament anyway, so he could still be in a good position to get info, he puts lots of set up around...it's he is preparing for something more ahead...

image.png image.png

It's clear Jounouchi is still bit disturbed by the events in Domino Pier, now he knows the source of the problem, he wants to take on Marik himself, when comes to this situations with Jounouchi, it's usually a set up for the duel is coming next with "fake" Marik and in the finals with the real one...

image.png

Jounouchi....Jounouchi...this scene is very funny and yet very impressive, he was able to cause a bit of damage in a wall made of metal with a punch even though it hurt him for recklessly punch a wall.
