I'm getting closer and closer to finish it, even though I'm starting to write my thoughts and observations plus interpretations about the semi-finals, I went far, however even if I finish the whole manga series, I will re-edit the first volumes thoughts and observations, it needs some changes...
You may be wondering why I call one Dark Yugi and the other Yami Bakura, when both mean the same thing (dark and yami), it's a way to distinguish them better.
Plot Summary:
The duel between Dark Yugi and Yami Bakura is about to begin, when they shuffle each others cards, they share a few words before they play.
The duel starts, at first Dark Yugi and the audience underestimate Yami Bakura skills and looks like Dark Yugi is dominating the duel, but Dark Yugi is a bit suspicious since it were strange tactics putting in attack mode and not putting any defense and magic or trap cards...when these tactics were meant to mislead the player's judgement and make the player let his guard down bit by bit and it works well for Yami Bakura, from then on, Yami Bakura dominates the duel.
Dark Yugi is cornered through Yami Bakura strange tactics and unusual duelling style, the moment he turns the tables, Yami Bakura was able to turn around to his favour again thanks to a bit of Marik's advice, which leaves one option to Dark Yugi, to summon his god card, since monsters effects and traps doesn't work on gods cards and magic cards only last for one turn, the moment he is able to summon it, Yami Bakura is the one who becomes in deep trouble and Marik interferes suggesting to let Ryou Bakura taking over, who is severely injured so Dark Yugi would hold back and forfeit the match, it almost works but since Yami Bakura still needs his host to fulfil his goals, he chooses to take over to protect Ryou from god's card attack and tells Dark Yugi to attack.
The duel ends with Dark Yugi's victory and Ryou takes over and sent immediately under medical care.
Key Points:
At least Dark Yugi suspects that maybe have been for longer time, probably suspects since Duelist Kingdom when trying to solve the riddle of the doors, due to Yami Bakura help up a bit against the twins.
Now as for the friends, they should have realized way sooner, Dark Yugi and friends should have suspected just by the fact Bakura entered the tournament and how he got the duel disk in the first place for someone who isn't an active player in TCG Magic and Wizards, Yugi was the first to suspect it, though.
Jounouchi is half right and half wrong, let's say he is not being very clear, it's just from what he understands, the fact some people who have millenium items develop a split personality, I think he is referring the items containing evil intelligence, I say this because when someone develops a split personality, it's usually because of personality and mental disorders or traumatic experiences, there is a character who did truly develop a split personality without a millenium item...

I have to say their exchange of words is quite interesting and between two spirits that were sealed in the millenium items and both having their hosts, Dark Yugi is a bit surprised he plays cards, the non-surprised part would be because that explains how Ryou suddenly became a participant of Battle City, they speak to each other as if they're neighbours, it's pretty funny, which in a sense they are...
As for the reasons he states why he wants the Dark Yugi's god card is a bit suspicious to dominate the gaming world, however in his thoughts we know the real reasons is the agreement with Marik however he wants Dark Yugi and Yugi keep the millenium puzzle being the final piece to open the "Dark Door" to claim the power of darkness...
It's clear Dark Yugi isn't convinced by the reasons Yami Bakura claimed and is starting to get suspicions he might be working with Marik...
I think is a bit surprising, Marik proposes to interfere, but here is one of the first signs that the main villain of the whole series does have some principals of his own...as much I hate to admit it.
I find it kinda funny that Marik being interfering is very annoying to Yami Bakura.
I usually don't involve TCG of Yu-Gi-Oh! in my observations of the manga however it was in this match when was first introduced special summoning monsters and special summoning in general (special summon a 3 stars monster or lower, etc), which in later spin-offs of the series appears quite often.
I thought would be an interesting reminder.
Dark Yugi acknowledging he underestimated Yami Bakura is a nice step in his character development and helps improves his posture in dueling (which is one of the problems he has due to his ego), when he played against Mai in Duelist Kingdom, it took time for him to admit it was a huge mistake for underestimating her, same can applies for miscalculating Yugi's strength a little as in the end he admits to himself after realising how Yugi was strong, also Dark Yugi was impressed seeing an unusual method to summon a monster which is advantageous to mislead the player's judgement.
What I found most amusing in this duel is how Kaiba was impressed by Yami Bakura dueling style, we know he is very hard to impress.
Sorry for emphasising his reaction to Yami Bakura skills, it's that amusingly interesting, not only was he impressed, he became interested as well, it's extremely rare of Kaiba to even become interested in a duelist besides Marik, Yugi and Dark Yugi (he may acknowledge someone as a duelist but doesn't mean he is interested), which is quite an achievement in itself, Yami Bakura should feel honoured...
In this kind of duel, it requires thinking outside of the box and it reveals that Yami Bakura actually has a very creative style however is conceited, because the player believes if he plays this combo, no one can't ever get out of it and believes is an invincible combo, when Marik points the weakness to his strategy and predicting Dark Yugi next move, it shows Marik is a bit more skilled than Yami Bakura at the moment.
It looks like the events in the Domino Pier had a strong effect on the bond between spirit and host in the case of Dark Yugi and Yugi leading into making their bond stronger, Yugi now has no difficulty in reaching Dark Yugi during this duel and will continue this way in the future because Dark Yugi growing trust in him and becoming more aware of his strength, even from Yugi's side who is becoming more decisive and determined.
This Ishizu scene focus on this duel really strong, it's pretty much a set up to the future volumes after Battle City story arc, the god cards has a very important role in the pharaoh's memories, the way she phrases indicates that Dark Yugi is the real owner of the god cards being the pharaoh soul who is summoning Slifer The Sky Dragon.
I find almost unbelievable how they fall for this very polite "Marik", he speaks in a dignified manner and very serious expression, the way he phrases and his expression, it's obvious he is actually worried about Ryou Bakura wound, while the real Marik smiles and laughs and not worrying about Ryou's wound plus his behaviour and manner of speaking is way too different from "Marik"Rishid.
It's clear Rishid doesn't agree with what Marik is ordering him to do in what he is doing and himself and feels sadness and disappointment at his master, implies Marik was before a much better person than how he is now and his obsession of revenge towards someone he knows doesn't deserve while holding something back.
It's evident Dark Yugi doesn't want to attack but feels conflicted because if he doesn't win, he will never be able to regain his memories, it also feels like a repeat of the duel against Kaiba in Duelist Kingdom to him, so he feels more fearful and not sure what to do...
This is when it gets interesting, even the main villain of the series gets some character development but for different reasons, Yami Bakura doesn't like Marik's style, which makes him realise even himself has his own principles and is seeing also from a strategic point to achieve his goal...
Simply because Yami Bakura chosen Ryou Bakura as his permanent host being in a very convenient position and decides to shield Ryou's body because he still needs his host to achieve his main goal, he says something interesting to Dark Yugi that caught my attention...
"Don't worry, your little gaming buddy won't die! So strike!"
It confirms to us Yugi and Ryou are both friends who share the same interest, games, making it technically gaming buddies and both have similar personalities, also it's hinted that Yami Bakura is quite observant and attentive to their daily lives, probably to catch on any useful information.
This way of ending the duel is a reminder to the readers again that he is the main villain and a clue to an important set up of the final battle in the pharaoh's memories being restored and power of darkness being unleashed...an important clue of what's coming...
See ya next post!
